Muscle Power Profile in Muay Thai Athletes: a Descriptive Study
Abstract
Introduction: Muscular power is a key determinant of performance in combat sports, especially in explosive actions such as striking, where strength and speed must be integrated in a coordinated manner. In Muay Thai, however, scientific evidence on power profiles is still limited, making it difficult to establish benchmarks for specific physical training. Objective: To describe the muscle power profile of Argentine Muay Thai athletes, considering variables of upper body power, lower body power, and striking speed. Methodology: Thirty athletes (27 men and 3 women; 30.0 ± 7.2 years; 76.1 ± 8.3 kg) were evaluated using striking speed tests, bench press and squat power tests, and squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), and drop jump (DJ) tests. Means and standard deviations were analyzed. Results: Average peak speeds were 5.4 ± 1.3 m/s for the jab and 6.9 ± 1.3 m/s for the straight punch. The average power in the squat (436.4 ± 103.8 W at 70 % of body weight) exceeded that of the bench press (325.7 ± 77.7 W). The jumps showed an expected sequence SJ<CMJ<DJ (28.8 ± 4.5; 30.3 ± 5.5; 31.4 ± 5.5 cm). Discussion: The results confirm a more homogeneous expression of power in the lower body and greater variability in the upper body. Conclusions: Athletes have a balanced competitive profile, with a solid strength base and potential for improvement in converting power to specific speed.
