Assessment of Knowledge about Coronary Artery Disease and Medication Adherence in Cardiac Rehabilitation

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate and determine the relationship between knowledge about coronary artery disease (CAD) and drug therapy adherence of patients participating in a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program (Phase II) of a public teaching hospital of tertiary level in central region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study evaluating the following outcomes: level of knowledge of coronary patients participating in CR about CAD (CADE-Q - Questionnaire for Coronary Patient Education) and therapeutic adherence (MMAS-8 - Therapeutic Adherence Scale of Morisky's eight items).Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, adopting p<0.05. Results: The sample consisted of 42 patients (62.26±8.31 years; 85.71% men). The individuals had a level of knowledge about CAD classified as “good” - 41 (36-44) points, as well as a median of therapeutic adherence of 7 (7-8) points, which was classified as moderate adherence. There was no significant difference between the level of adherence and level of knowledge, as well as nocorrelation was observed between patients' knowledge about CAD and medication therapeutic adherence. Conclusions: It was concluded that patients participating in a CR program, even though they were not submitted to a formal educational component, had a good level of knowledge about CAD and moderate adherence to therapy. The findings indicate the need to implement public policies that facilitate the offer, referral and participation of patients in multidisciplinary CR programs, based mainly on the practice of health education.
