Comparison between Kinesiotherapy and Hydrotherapy in Fibromyalgia: A Randomized Clinical Study
Abstract
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic and multifactorial painful syndrome. There are several treatments, and physical exercises and hydrotherapy have proven their effectiveness. The objectives of the study were to describe the clinical and sociodemographic profile of people with FM, in addition to comparing pain level, pain catastrophizing, and quality of life between the groups of land exercises and water exercises before and after the proposed interventions. This is a randomized clinical study with data collected from 30 participants from June 2024 to September 2024. The participants were divided into Kinesiotherapy Group (KG) and Hydrotherapy Group (HG). Both groups performed the same intervention protocol for eight weeks and the variables pain catastrophizing and quality of life were evaluated using an Assessment Form, Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and the Brazilian Version of the Quality-of-Life Questionnaire-SF-36 (SF-36). In KG, there was a statistically significant improvement (p<0.05) in the total score of the SF-36 and in the Bodily Pain, Energy/Vitality and Social Functioning domains. In HG, a significant improvement was observed in the Physical Functioning and Physical role limitations of the SF-36. In neither group was there an improvement in the PCS result. In the intergroup comparisons, there was no significant difference. Although there is no difference between kinesiotherapy and hydrotherapy interventions, both individually are effective methods for improving pain and the quality of life of fibromyalgia patients.
