Noninvasive Ventilation in Aerobic Training of Patients with Heart Failure
Abstract
Introduction: Heart failure causes dyspnea and fatigue, and cardiac rehabilitation is one of the alternatives to improve functionality. Aerobic training is an effective therapeutic option, and noninvasive ventilation also demonstrates good results. Objective: To analyze the effect of aerobic training combined with noninvasive ventilation on the functional capacity of patients with heart failure. Method: This is a before-and-after analytical intervention study. The intervention consisted of combining aerobic training with continuous airway ventilation twice a week for 12 weeks. The outcome variables evaluated were the distance covered in the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and the number of repetitions in the one-minute sit-to-stand test (1MST). Results: The sample was predominantly male (n=4/80%), with a mean age of 59.29±16.97 years. The distance covered in the 6MWT increased, non-significantly, from 363±172.61 meters to 487.25±102.01 meters after rehabilitation (p=0.068). The 1min SRT increased from 16.20±4.97 repetitions to 22±1.58 repetitions after rehabilitation (p=0.043). Conclusion: Cardiac rehabilitation, involving aerobic training combined with the use of non-invasive ventilation, promoted improvements in the functional capacity of patients with heart failure.
