Impact of Dance Therapy on the Stress Vulnerability of Older Adults in Quito

Abstract

Dance therapy has been implemented as a therapeutic intervention to manage stress levels in the elderly, prevent early aging, and improve their quality of life; its efficiency in physical, mental, and social well-being has been demonstrated. The purpose of this research was to determine the impact of dance therapy on the stress vulnerability of older adults attending the Club 60 y Piquito de la Lucha de los Pobres in Quito, Ecuador, 2024. The present research adopts a mixed approach: qualitative phenomenological and quantitative analytical. It was carried out in older adults aged 60 years who attend the bailoterapia of the sector of the Lucha de los Pobres in Quito, Ecuador. They were applied the Questionnaire of Vulnerability to Stress, of which 17 attended the scheduled talk (10 women and 7 men) who belong to the Club 60 and Piquito and attend bailoterapia twice a week (60 minutes per session). It was determined that 85% of the older adults who attend the dance therapy of the Sector Lucha de los Pobres are vulnerable to stress after obtaining a score between 30 and 39 on the Stress Vulnerability Scale; likewise, it was identified that there are external factors such as economic situation, health, social support, and characteristics of the population that influence vulnerability to stress. Therefore, it would be convenient for future research to apply validated surveys of vulnerability to stress in two stages (pre- and post-stress).
