Physical Activity as a Protective Factor to the Clinical-Functional Vulnerability in Dwelling Older Women
Cross-Sectional Study
Abstract
Background: Population aging has been increasingly and impacting on society. Therefore, research in the area of aging must be able to observe the declines inherent to this condition, quantifying the risks and developing strategies to combat them, and maintain a healthy life. Purpose: Stratify the risk of vulnerability in older women who practice physical activities, when compared to sedentary older women. Method: Cross-sectional study, which included 105 older women, living in the community, in the city of Porto Alegre. They were divided into two groups: 42 in a control group, sedentary, and 63 in a training group, included in physical training programs. They were assessed for their clinical functional vulnerability index. Results: Both groups were homogeneous in age, weight and height. As for the stratification of the risk of functional clinical vulnerability, there was a statistically significant difference, favorable to the TG (p=0.021). 52% of CG showed low vulnerability, against 70% of GT. Still 38% of CG and 24% of GT showed an increased level of vulnerability. Finally, 9.5% of CG had a high risk, compared to only 3% of GT. Conclusion: Being in a regular physical training program is a protective factor for clinical-functional vulnerability, decreasing the chance of vulnerability by one third, when compared to sedentary individuals.
