Adapted Training to Improve Postural Control in Adolescents with Cerebellar Ataxia: Biomechanical Solutions
Abstract
The present study evaluated the effectiveness of an adapted training program based on Therapeutic and Prophylactic Physical Culture (PTPC) and Functional Training (FT) to improve postural control, motor coordination and functional autonomy in a 14-year-old adolescent with cerebellar ataxia secondary to chickenpox. A quantitative, exploratory and descriptive approach was adopted, using instruments such as the strength platform, the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Ataxia Scale (SARA). The program was implemented for 16 weeks, with supervised 45-minute sessions, three times a week, in a specialized center in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The results showed significant improvements in static and dynamic postural control, motor coordination and quality of life of the participant, although the gains were modest due to the limited duration. These findings support the feasibility of personalized and progressive interventions to address functional limitations associated with cerebellar ataxia. We conclude that prolonged programs could maximize benefits, highlighting the importance of integrative approaches that promote social inclusion and comprehensive development. This study contributes to the design of more effective and personalized interventions for people with cerebellar ataxia, prioritizing biomechanical solutions and therapeutic strategies tailored to individual needs. The objective is to determine the effects of an adapted training program, based on the principles of Therapeutic and Prophylactic Physical Culture (PTPC), Functional Training (FT) and simplified periodization, on postural control in a 14-year-old adolescent with Cerebellar Ataxia (CA).
