Abstract

The imaginaries about the teaching work have been changing as the time pasts, moreover, there is little documentation on the subject at the Physical Education department of the University Metropolitan of Sciences of the Education (UMCE). Which was a motivation to investigate a group of students from fourth and third year at the Pedagogy program and Degree in Physical Education, Sports and Recreation. As a general objective it was stipulated: to describe the imaginaries or social representations that these students have about the teaching work. For the elaboration of this research, it was used a qualitative approach methodology, of a descriptive type to respond to the proposed objectives. Also, it was used a semi-structured interview directed by thematic axes. It was possible to establish an imaginary category called Social Commitment and two subcategories; it was found that for students the characteristics of a teacher should be primarily: empathy and closeness with their students, consistent with what they teach, teachers for academic and human values, understanding, patient, committed and responsible to students. In addition to that, teachers must have vocation to perform the teaching work in the best way and know how to respond to the particular needs of their students.
